August 2022

Five months since the last post and the Strathmatters group has been busy. Earlier in the year a trading table to downsize the stash! A picnic and op-shop crawl to add to the stash? Felting, knitting, weaving, braiding, prodding, hooking and cross-stitch rugs in the making, completed and more.

Keep on crafting! Best times from Strathalbyn xx Chris

March 2022

Strathmatters is back at its home at the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Center from 10 – 12:30. At the first meeting of the year on March 4 the group determined that StrathMatters has become more than rughooking and rug making and that our groups descriptors should reflect the diversity of fibre arts that are undertaken by our members. So by popular discussion the group determined that our title will reflect this creativity.

Welcome 2022 to STRATHMATTERS – Rugs and More!

The group will continue to meet on the first and third Fridays of the month between 10 – 12:30, with April being an exception, as Easter falls in April this year.

April trading table and outing and home storage sort!

On April 1 a trading table or “chuck out table” is planned. Empty your cupboards of less cherished items and bring to sell or share. On Friday 29 April an op shop crawl in Goolwa was suggested, as we will not be meeting on Easter Friday the usual 3rd Friday of the month. The details of both to be determined at our next March session. Sounds like fun.

So it is a good time to start sorting those craft cupboards over the next few weeks. You’ll be able to move on “stuff” that’s accumulated and not yet been used over the years – yet have the ability to refill those cupboards by the end of the month, with treasures found on the trade table or op shopping! Hmmmm

Enjoy the photos below of handiwork completed, in progress, and of the general camaraderie at StrathMatters first meeting of 2022.

Til next time!

Chris

December 2021

Christmas is almost here and our StrathMatters group will have a short summer holiday and resume again in 2022, from the first week in February. That is Friday February 4th, at the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre. The times have been adjusted to 10:30am to 12:30pm, to accommodate the distances some members travel.

I’ve included some photos of a hooked rug completed by our leader Judy and a proddy bathroom rug “bubbles” by Kathy.

Kathy has another proddy rug in progress and all are made from her used T Shirt collection. How neat is the underside of Kathy’s second rug of a similar design. Love the use of recycled fabrics in an up-cycled project!

Also in this post are photos of the December Workshop where Jenny B led the group in making Christmas wreaths from old music sheets. Not strictly rug making but a fun end of year activity with some serious faces lovely ladies! We wished Judy well as she was not able to join us at this last session of the year. I hope you’ll forgive the photos girls and talk to me next year?

Greetings of the season from Strathalbyn StrathMatters.

Chris.

November 2021

A lot has happened since the last post in August. StrathMatters has continued to meet on the first and third Fridays of the month. In October, Yvonne ran a flower printing session and Jenny B kindly hosted the group at her home and we shared in her hospitality. Thank you to Yvonne and Jenny B.

Here are some photographs which sum up the colour and warmth of our last few months.

Yvonne led the group in a flower printing workshop in October; with flowers, fabric, card, rocks and pounding. Lots of noise and fun!

Until next time, from StrathMatters!

August 2021

Where did July go? That week in lockdown maybe? Thinking how fortunate we are to be living in South Australia.

This photo of the StrathMatters group below was taken in July, when we returned in August there were new mandated rules around mask wearing indoors and distancing requirements.

Completed work below and rug hooking projects on the go by talented ladies!

Til next time!

June 2021

The end of the financial year is here and StrathMatters Rugmakers continue to build on skills learned. Photographs of projects on the go and finished below.

From July 2, 2021 StrathMatters group will continue to meet at the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre on the first and third Fridays of the month, but have extended the time from 10 am – 1 pm. $5 a session.

See you then! Chris

May 2021

As May comes to a close this summary highlights the rug making sessions held in Strathalbyn.

On May 7 Yvonne ran a session on natural dyeing processes, using flowers from the garden. Flowers were steeped with boiling water and experiments with Allum, Cream of Tartar and wood ash enabled an understanding of how shades would vary in intensity. Photographs below.

May 21 Lou brought along three visitors to Strathmatters. Judy led a spontaneous tutorial on Proddy Rugs and enthusiastically three new rug projects were started! Photographs below.

Until next time – Chris.

April 2021

Pauline’s Dorset Button session on Friday on April 16 added to the enjoyment of Strathmatters rug making this month.

Dorset buttons are colourful thread wound embroidered rings. The button craft originated in the county of Dorset in the 17th century. Pictured above Pauline’s Dorset buttons.

Pauline taught the Strathmatters group how to make Dorset Cartwheel Buttons.

Kathy brought her newly finished proddy rug made from her old t-shirts.

Strathmatters meet at 10am on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month.

Remember to bring three jars with lids and flowers for the next session. Yvonne will take the group through the process of dyeing.

Until then do you rug or will you button? Cheers Chris.

March Friday Stick Weaving Workshop.

Judy guided the group through the Stick Weaving process on the 5th of March at the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre. It was enjoyed by all that attended. The pile of pre-cut fabric strips were turned into hot-pot pads by the end of the session, with the aid of sticks, cord, glue gun and good company!

Rug-making inspiration from Angela and Yvonne.

Angela has completed a hooked a whimsical picture of houses, in rug wools.

Yvonne (below) is creating a series of wall panels with a variety of fabrics and mixed techniques including punch needle work, proddy and couching.

Rug making sessions are now held from 10am to 12 noon at the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Center, Parker Avenue, Strathalbyn, on the first and third Friday of the month. All welcome!

Until next time. Chris.

December 2020
